About the artist…

Herman W. Hansen (1854-1924) was one of the earliest artists to popularize Wild West imagery. He gained firsthand knowledge of cowboy life while exploring western cattle country. After a few years of wandering he settled in San Francisco in 1882. There he met and married Olga Josue, and the couple had two children. Their son Armin became a famous painter and etcher of marine images.

Hansen made summer sketching trips throughout the Southwest and Northern Plains. He was a friend and painting companion to William Keith and Maynard Dixon, each of whom developed very different painting styles.

Hansen’s remarkable draftsman’s skills are evident in his etchings, which are noteworthy for their highly realistic and detailed depictions of horses, riders, and western landscape. His greatest skill was in capturing the movement and tensions of horses and riders in action, as exemplified by “The Old Overland.” Hansen made just eight etchings near the end of his life while under the tutelage of his son, Armin. He died in 1924, the same year this etching was printed.
