About the work

Original pencil-signed lithograph depicting Virginia City, Nevada; this work is not framed.  

“Virginia City” was offered by the San Francisco Chronicle in 1940. The foreground shows the Union and Old Mexican mines, with the distinctive form of St. Mary’s Church on the right. The scene looks past Sugar Loaf Mountain to Carson Valley in the distance. 

John Charles Haley (1905 - 1991) studied in Europe with Hans Hofmann and André Lhote before arriving in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1930. He then began a decades-long career as Professor of Art at the University of California in Berkeley. 

Haley was a member of the San Francisco Art Association and the California Watercolor Society. Solo exhibitions of his work include the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Richmond Art Center, the University of California in Berkeley, and the de Young Memorial Museum. His works are represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, de Young Memorial Museum, University of California in Berkeley, Oakland Museum, Mills College, and the Phillips Collection.
