About the work
This large, colorful work depicts Pyramid Lake outside of Reno, Nevada. The painting was referenced in a 1941 edition of the Reno Evening Gazette under the title “Noted Painter to Exhibit Work.” The article states that Dawes was to hold an exhibition at the studios of Miss Eva M. Hovey, 431 Lake Street, in Reno, and mentions his recently completed work “Pyramid Lake at Sunset.” The article notes that Dawes was regarded as a great colorist by critics and praised for his rare atmospheric effects, qualities that are highly evident in his painting of Pyramid Lake.
Edwin Minot Dawes (1872 - 1945) painted and exhibited in the Midwest until he departed Minnesota in 1913 for the western United States. By the early 1920s he settled in Fallon, Nevada, where he lived on West Center Street and later West Williams Avenue. Dawes lived in Fallon and Lovelock for more than 20 years, where he was heavily involved in the mining industry and regarded as an innovator in mining methods and technology. After retiring to the Los Angeles area sometime around 1940, he continued to visit northern Nevada on a regular basis. During one of those visits he painted Pyramid Lake at Sunset.
Of the hundreds of paintings Dawes can be surmised to have made, less than 30 were known to exist as of the early 2000s, although a number have surfaced since, including Pyramid Lake at Sunset.
By 1941 news articles of the day noted that his canvases had been accepted for exhibition at such prestigious institutions as the National Academy, New York City; Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Chicago Art Institute; Museum of Fine Arts, Milwaukee; Art Institute of St. Paul; Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Los Angeles Museum of Arts, and others.
